Yorkie Chihuahua Mix

The Yorkie Chihuahua mix is a mix between the Yorkshire Terrier and the Chihuahua, and has become known as the Chorkie, the Yorchie and even the Yorkiehuahua. This cross breed was created to mix the Chihuahua’s intelligence with the Yorkie’s looks. The Yorkie Chihuahua mix became popular in the 1990s and is recognised by the American Canine Hybrid Club.
These designer dogs will feel at home in any environment, from farms to apartments. They are active dogs, and will require regular walking or some other form of exercise, however they will tend to have a nap after they have experienced a burst of energy.

Since Chihuahuas and Yorkies are small breeds, the Chorkie will also be relatively small, weighing in between 7 and 10 pounds. They can be found in any color or combination of colors in which Chihuahuas and Yorkies are found, however the most popular color is gold. Since the Chihuahua Yorkie mix normally resemble the terrier in the bloodline, puppies tend to be born black with tan markings and gradually change to a golden color, just like a Yorkie. Although there are variations in the coat, the most popular coat is the long silky coat inherited from the Yorkie. Chorkie tails may be docked.

Chorkies are intelligent, warm, loyal and friendly. They are very playful and not only enjoy human companionship, but also that of other animals of a similar size to them. They make great companions for all, from families with children to the elderly. Although they may be good with children, their fragile build may render them open to injury by a playful child.

The Yorkie Chihuahua mix is fearless, bold, and loyal to its family. This makes them very good guard dogs, since they will warn of the presence of strangers near the home. Although initially they may display some reservation around strangers, they will warm up given some attention. They are also highly intelligent, and as a result puppies may get bored easily and adopt negative behavior if left alone for a long time.

Chorkies tend to be of good health, however, it is possible that they may suffer from afflictions which are common to small dogs, such as issues with leg joints. Kneecap dislocation is suffered frequently by females. The most common causes for this affliction are injury and genetic malformation. If by 4 months of age, your Chorkie has not shown any sign of this condition, the chances are they will not be afflicted by this. When well looked after and with regular check ups, the Yorkie Chihuahua mix will have an average life expectancy of up to 15 years.
